If Wayne Rooney left Manchester United only a few clubs could afford him, according to Arsène Wenger.

The England star is in the headlines after reportedly falling out with his manager Sir Alex Ferguson and refusing to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.

Wenger expects Rooney to stay put but, if he doesn’t, the Frenchman believes the list of realistic suitors would be very short.

“Today only three or four clubs can buy Wayne Rooney,” said Wenger.

“What you also know, for Rooney, is that it will not be a financial choice. He will decide if he stays. He would say 'Old Trafford is my home, I will stay there'. And Manchester United would turn up with the right number. He knows that and they know that.”
