Arsène Wenger admits that Manchester City will be a bigger threat in the title race if they splash the cash in January.

The transfer window swings open on New Year’s Day and the Premier League’s richest club is expected to flex its financial muscles with Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko reportedly on City’s radar.

Roberto Mancini’s side are level on points with leaders Manchester United and Wenger expects them to have an even bigger say in the Premier League run-in if they bolster their squad.

“Can they add more quality?” he pondered. “Certainly, because they have the chequebook to do it.

“Will it make them more dangerous? Certainly as well, but they are already a threat for the championship.

“To buy is always a risk but if they buy players like Dzeko there is also the risk that they are much stronger offensively because this guy can score goals. I don’t think that they will be weaker if they buy, they will be stronger.”

However, Wenger can see a silver lining for City’s not-so-rich rivals.

“With Manchester City, the good thing is that if they buy something they have to take somebody out of their team who is already a top-level player,” he said.
