Bacary Sagna has hailed Carl Jenkinson’s impressive start to the season and says the right back has the quality to be “one of the best”.

After fracturing his fibula against Norwich in May, Sagna has watched on as his understudy has filled in with a series of excellent performances.

The France international made his comeback for the under-21s on Monday night, and admits he faces a tough task to win his first-team place back from Jenkinson.

“He has been really good, and has learned a lot,” Sagna told Arsenal Player. “He is a bit more confident with the ball, and is very solid as a defender.

“He brings a lot to the team, and I am very happy for him because he is a hard worker, a very good guy and is going to be one of the best.”

Sagna has been similarly pleased with Arsenal’s strong start to the campaign, and is confident it will lead to a concerted title bid.

“We have been solid,” he said. “I think we can win the league: we have to take it step by step, but we have the quality necessary to play until the end of the season and win.”
