Arsène Wenger has hailed Jack Wilshere’s return - but says he “will only be great if the team is great”.
The 20-year-old returned to competitive action for the first time in 17 months in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over QPR, and delivered a stirring display.
But Wenger has sought to dampen sky-high expectations by insisting that the Arsenal team is about more than one player.
“Jack is a great player but he will only be great if the team is great,” the manager told Arsenal Player.
“There is not one player that you want to have that complete responsibility [for the whole side].
“I believe we have an interesting team, even more so now that Jack is back. So let’s express ourselves as a team and then Jack will be good.”
Wilshere had only previously played with four members of the Arsenal side that beat QPR, and Wenger says it may take some time to gel completely.
“He has been out for 17 months and in the last 17 months our squad has changed a lot. Many players left,” he said.
“For the first game it looked quite promising. He plays in a new midfield because the last time he played it was with Nasri, Fabregas and Song.
“Now he is in a new midfield, and it can take a little bit of time to adjust but that will come quickly.”
