Arsène Wenger was puzzled when Denilson stepped up to strike the free-kick from which he scored Arsenal's opener against Hull City.
The Brazilian midfielder returned to the Gunners' starting XI on Saturday after missing the trip to Burnley with a back injury.
And on the stroke of half-time he curled a 25-yard free-kick into the back of the net. The goal broke the deadlock at Emirates Stadium, helping Arsenal to a 3-0 victory.
However Denilson was not meant to take the set-piece.
"I was puzzled that Denilson took the free-kick," explained Wenger.
"Maybe Samir Nasri was going to take it but he had a problem.
"They know who takes the free-kicks. Robin van Persie is No 1, Cesc Fabregas No 2 or Nasri. Vermaelen goes for long distance.
"Sometimes you have to accept when someone doesn't feel right and gives it to someone else."
