Arsène Wenger has hailed his side’s defensive improvement after they claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Wigan on Saturday.

Arsenal were put under real pressure by Roberto Martinez’s side after taking the lead through Mikel Arteta’s penalty, but held on for a vital three points.

Wenger was delighted with the resilience his side showed, and believes it augers well for the rest of the campaign.

“You could see that defensively we are getting better as a unit, as a team,” he told Arsenal Player. “That is one of the positives of the day.

“We won the game in the end because we really wanted the points but we were hanging on a bit in the last 30 minutes. I am very happy that we made it in the end but we were on the ropes a bit.

“We made a demonstration offensively against Reading [when we won 5-2], but here it was more of a demonstration of defensive efficiency. I hope in the next game that we can produce the two together."

Arsenal have risen up to fourth in the table after three successive victories, and Wenger is confident his side can maintain their good form.

“As soon as you are consistent in this league, you can climb up [the table] very quickly,” he said. “Everybody is good, but it is difficult to be consistent and once you manage it, you climb very quickly. That is what we want to focus on.”
