Wojciech Szczesny says he is grateful to have serious competition for the No 1 spot at Arsenal, because it brings out the best of him.
With Lukasz Fabianski injured, Vito Mannone stood in for Szczesny after the Polish international saw his start to the season disrupted by rib and ankle problems.
Szczesny made his return to action in Saturday’s win over Tottenham and insists he relishes the battle with his fellow goalkeepers.
“I’m happy to have the competition,” he said. “Obviously I was frustrated to be on the sidelines, not just matches but not training either.
“I managed to get back into the team and had two very good results. But I’m happy to have the competition from Vito. I hope it brings the best out of both of us.
“It’s normal. We’re good friends. I’ve known him ever since I joined the club. We’re happy for each other if we have a good game. But each of us wants to be No 1 and only one of us can be. It’s good competition.
“He’s done well. He’s a good goalkeeper. The least you can ask of him is that he will want to be No 1. I’m happy with that.”Copyright 2016 The Arsenal Football Club plc.
