Jack Wilshere believes Arsenal could lay the foundations for years of success if they win a trophy this season.

The Gunners face an FA Cup third-round replay against Swansea after they were held to a 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

Arsène Wenger’s side are also in the last-16 of the Champions League and Wilshere insists they are well placed to achieve success.

“When you finish a career, you look back and see how many trophies you have won so we all want them and we know how much the fans do too,” he said.

“We’re all hungry for it and maybe if we get a trophy this year it can open the way for a few more. We’ve got a good crop of young players and experienced plays as well, such as Arteta and others.

“If we get a trophy this year or in the next couple of years we can really build something and be strong in the next few years.

“It’s easy to sit here and say that when we get that first trophy it’ll happen but we know how tough the FA Cup. We’re still in the Champions League, so we’re in a good position and we just need to make sure we get the results now.”

Arsenal face a testing month, with games against Manchester City, Swansea, Chelsea and Liverpool on the horizon. Wilshere accepts it will be a major challenge, but says the squad are ready for it.

“We’ve got a tough few games [coming up] and we know that in England at this time of year it is so important,” he said. “We’ve got a big game on Sunday and while we know City are a good team, we’re at our home so we have to take the game to them.

“We know we need results. We’re not in the position in the league that we want to be in. We want to be higher. We’ve got a couple of games in hand and we have to make sure we make them count.”
