Wojciech Szczesny has explained the reasons behind Arsenal’s improved second-half performance against Chelsea on Sunday.

An early Juan Mata strike and Frank Lampard’s penalty put the hosts in charge at Stamford Bridge, before a strong response from the Gunners saw them reduce the deficit and go close to earning a point.

Szczesny says a slight change in formation at the interval was behind the shift in momentum in west London.

“It was a very tough start for us, I thought Chelsea played much better and created chances and we couldn't deal with it in the first half,” the goalkeeper said.

“In the second half we were much better. We changed shape a bit, pushed Abou Diaby forward, played with one defensive midfielder and pressed them much higher up.

“They couldn't get out, the only way they could was to go long ball and we managed to win the first and second balls and then we created chances.”
