Arsenal Ladies forward Rachel Yankey says her side’s Women’s Super League title was the best possible answer to the critics who wrote the team off before the start of the season.
The inaugural WSL campaign saw stronger teams and more competition for the title and many people questioned whether the Gunners would prevail.
But Laura Harvey’s side showed why they have been dominant team in the women’s game over the last decade, finishing three points clear of their closest rivals at the top of the league.
“Everyone wrote us off and said that it wasn’t going to be Arsenal’s year but we’ve battled on and won it. It feels fantastic to lift the trophy,” Yankey told Arsenal.com.
“It’s been a tough season for us and it’s been a long season. It feels like we’ve been playing throughout the whole year.
"But we have so much quality and character in our squad and it has shown this season. We’ve had to deal with injuries and setbacks but we have bounced back every time so it feels great to pick up another league title."
With the pressure on Arsenal to get the three points they needed to win the WSL title, Harvey’s side needed all of their experience to get them over the finish line.
And it was Yankey who emerged as the hero against Liverpool, grabbing two first-half goals to send the Gunners on their way to a 3-1 win.
“Finding the back of the net is not my strong point so it was fantastic to get two goals on Sunday," said Yankey.
“The goals gave us a cushion and settled us down so we could start to play our football.”
