Yankey - This is a career highlight for me

By Oliver Yew

Arsenal Ladies forward Rachel Yankey says winning the domestic treble ranks alongside being part of the quadruple-winning side of 2007 on her list of career achievements.

The England international was an instrumental figure in both teams and she believes the current crop of Gunners can be just as proud of their success this season as their illustrious predecessors.

“Winning the quadruple back in 2007 is the highlight of my career but because of the circumstances this season is right up there alongside it,” Yankey told Arsenal.com.

“Back in 2007 we had strong players with a huge amount of experience and they knew what it took to win. This season we have a relatively young squad and it has had to cope with a whole host of injuries.

“For long periods of time we were without Jayne Ludlow and Faye White, who are massive players for us, but everybody stepped up and did their jobs,” she added.

Yankey received the Player of the Match award in Sunday’s Continental Cup Final victory over Birmingham after grabbing two goals - the second of which she ranks as possibly the finest of her career.

The England star's 20-yard volley flew past Blues goalkeeper Marie Hourihan into the roof of the net to seal a 4-1 victory.

“It felt like the best goal of my career,” said Yankey. “It was a great pass by Jayne [Ludlow] and it sat up perfectly and I just hit it. Luckily it flew into the net.”
