In an environment where fans are more unforgiving than ever, Arsène Wenger insists that his team must be responsible for generating “good vibes” at Emirates Stadium.

The last addition to Arsenal’s glittering trophy cabinet came almost four years ago, when Patrick Vieira struck the decisive penalty in their FA Cup Final shoot-out victory against Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium.

And, as Wenger prepares for the final third of a season he describes as “tougher than any other”, the manager admits that much of the supporters’ impatience is driven by the recent lack of trophies.

“Of course {the impatience] is linked with trophies because that is the charge from the newspapers always,” he said ahead of Saturday’s visit of Fulham. “We have to deal with that. In our job we cannot complain. We have to create the positive vibes and get the fans on our side.

“I believe that this season has been tougher than any other year but at some stage I believe it will help the team to become stronger mentally.”

Although tangible silverware has not been forthcoming for Wenger’s side, the Frenchman thinks that Arsenal’s consistency in the Champions League is a measure of success in itself.

Only four clubs have qualified for the Champions League in each of the last 10 seasons. Wenger’s Gunners are one of them.

Despite that, the manager acknowledges that questions marks will surround his team until they lift a trophy.

“For me the most difficult thing to achieve is the Champions League and to do well in the Champions League every year, that is much more difficult,” he said. “When you look at this team, when we have everybody back, we are a very strong side. But we still have to convince everybody that we can get the results.

“It is very impatient but when you go for a youth policy you have to be behind your players and keep faith in them.

“This team has an average age of 20, 21 but has beaten Fenerbahce 5-2, won at Chelsea and beaten Man United but there are still question marks.”
