ARSENAL LADIES

UEFA Women's Champions League

Arsenal Ladies wait to hear Euro opponents

Arsenal Ladies will have to wait until August 14 for news of their first opponents in the inaugural UEFA Women's Champions League - the replacement for the UEFA Women's Cup.

The draw for the qualifying round took place on Wednesday to determine seven groups of four teams. Arsenal will not take part in this phase of the competition - they are one of 25 clubs to receive a bye.

The seven qualifying group winners will join those 25 clubs in the round of 32. The draw for that stage of the Women's Champions League will take place on August 14 at UEFA headquarters in Nyon.

From the round of 32 onwards, the competition will be played on a two-legged knockout basis, giving clubs more opportunity to play games at their home ground.

The other major innovation is the replacement of the two-legged Final with a one-off game, to be played before the men's Champions League Final in the same city.

Therefore, the first UEFA Women's Champions League Final will be held in Madrid on Thursday, May 20, 2010.
