Thursday, August 31, 2006

A glorious hat-trick from Kelly Smith inspired England Women to a 4-0 victory over Holland and leaves Hope Powell's side on the brink of qualifying for next year's World Cup.

The Arsenal Ladies star was on the scoresheet after just nine minutes, showing brilliant control before firing a shot into the bottom corner. She doubled her tally after 25 minutes, converting a penalty after being brought down inside the area.

Smith rounded off a memorable hat-trick after the break before her Arsenal colleague, Rachel Yankey, completed the scoring.

Arsenal Ladies provided seven of England's starting line-up against Holland with Alex Scott, Katie Chapman, Anita Asante, Mary Phillip and Karen Carney all starting the match alongside Smith and Yankey.

Arsenal and England captain Faye White did not play - she will miss much of the season with a knee ligament injury. However, White expects to return in time for next year's World Cup.
