England and Arsenal forward Kelly Smith has been nominated for the 2008 FIFA Women's World Player award, on a shortlist with just four other players.

With the list growing from three players to five this year in both the men's and women's categories, Smith has been included following another successful year for club and country which saw Arsenal complete a League and Cup double and England reach their third major tournament in succession.

Smith will be up against German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer, Brazil's attacking pair of Cristiane and Marta, with the list completed by the formidable forward from Germany Birgit Prinz.

Votes are cast by national team managers and captains from around the world, and the winner will be announced at a FIFA World Player Gala in Zurich on 12 January.
