Kelly Smith believes Arsenal Ladies have the edge on their rivals because they have so many goalscorers in their team.

Laura Harvey’s side recorded a convincing 4-2 victory over fellow title contenders Birmingham at Meadow Park on Sunday to extend their lead at the top of the Women’s Super League to five points.

Smith made her comeback from a three-month lay-off as a second-half substitute and believes the team are getting it right at the sharp end of the field.

“It's not just one player that is scoring,” said the striker. “Kim Little is on fire, Jordan Nobbs has been knocking them in and so the goals are coming in from across the whole attacking line.

“It was pleasing because we wanted to start Sunday’s game well and we knew Birmingham would be fierce and up for it. They are one of our nearest rivals and so to beat them so convincingly, especially scoring four goals, we are really pleased with that.

“I thought we were very professional. In the first half we really tried to dominate, we played it around very nicely in spells and we were glad to go in 2-0 up at half time.

“Birmingham came back into it a little bit in the second half but it was a pleasing performance all around. We wanted to win because it puts us five points clear going into the next game.

“I have been working hard in the last three weeks to push my fitness,” added Smith. “I am delighted to have got on in the last 20 minutes and I am just pleased we got the three points.”
