Harvey: 'We can emulate the men's team'

By Chris Harris

Arsenal Ladies manager Laura Harvey has urged her players to emulate the men’s side and turn a 2-1 first-leg defeat into an aggregate win in the Champions League.

The Ladies lost at Duisburg on Wednesday night after conceding goals to Inka Grings and Marina Hegering either side of half-time. However, an own goal from Grings threw Arsenal a life-line in the second half.

Arsène Wenger’s side also lost the first leg of their recent tie with Porto 2-1 – Sol Campbell scoring an away goal – and turned it around by thrashing the Portuguese side 5-0 at Emirates Stadium this week.

Harvey hopes the women can follow suit and advance to the Semi-Finals when they welcome Duisburg to Bishop’s Stortford FC on Sunday.

“The tie is still in the balance but the fact that we scored an away goal is big,” said Harvey. “We’ve made our chances better by staying in the game.

"We played a much better second half than the first when we were never really in the game. I liked the way we put pressure on them after the interval.

“Duisburg maybe have more experience than us, and have many senior internationals in their team. But I am pleased with the performance of my team. It was the expected difficult and tight match for both teams and we have got the important away goal we wanted.

“On Tuesday night the men were able to turn over a 2-1 deficit and win 5-0. Let’s hope we can do the same!”
