Finalnd 0-2 England
Thursday, September 16
Mo Marley’s U19s rounded off a perfect Euro 2011 First Round Qualifying campaign in Moldova with a 2-0 victory over Finland.
With both the Young Lions and their Finnish counterparts already guaranteed qualification into the Second Qualifying Round following victories over the hosts and Armenia, the afternoon fixture in Orhei would decide who would finish top of Group 1.
And it was the 2010 runners-up who came out on top.
Everton’s Alex Greenwood gave Marley’s charges the lead on 27 minutes, following a corner from Chelsea’s Drew Spence and they were able to hold on to their advantage going into the half-time break.
Just two minutes after the restart captain Jordan Nobbs doubled England’s lead and made it an uphill struggle for the Finns that they simply could not overcome.
The three qualification performances will please Marley greatly, having witnessed her young players score 15 goals and concede none.
And she will hope they can continue that kind of form when they head to the Second Round, where 24 teams will be split into six groups of four and again compete on a round-robin basis.
A berth at the 2011 European Championship in Italy and a chance to regain the title they won in 2009 remains England's goal.
