Emma Byrne believes Arsenal Ladies’ undiminished hunger for victory is the reason behind their continued dominance of the English game.

This season’s Women’s Super League triumph was the ninth successive time the Club have been crowned champions of England, while Byrne has won more than 20 major honours since signing in 2000.

And the goalkeeper says a strong belief that losing cannot be tolerated has underpinned the Club’s determination to carry on winning trophies.

“The players are all individuals who are motivated to win and motivated to stay at the top of their game,” Byrne told Arsenal.com. “We’ve been winning domestically for the last 10 years but we’ve also got Champions League that we want to start winning again.

“We won that once and really want to do it again - that’s motivation in itself. When you wear the Arsenal badge, it’s not acceptable to lose.“

Laura Harvey’s side were denied the opportunity to emulate their domestic treble of 2011 when Chelsea knocked them out of this season’s FA Women’s Cup at the semi-final stage.

Byrne admits the team were hurt by the loss, but maintains the setback drove them on to be successful in other competitions.

“We were really upset about losing because the FA Cup is a huge competition and is something we love being involved in,” she said. “It didn’t go well for us and we didn’t deserve to win so it brought us back to earth a bit.

“It showed we can lose and gain confidence again.”

After adding another two medals to her haul of honours, the 33-year-old insists the feeling of winning a trophy is still as special now as it was when she won her first more than a decade ago.

“It doesn’t matter how many we’ve won because it feels great every time,” Byrne said. “It’s brilliant to win and we never want to stop doing that.

“It’s something that is engrained into us and hopefully the kids can take on.”
