Each year Arsenal Ladies F.C. organise the Arsenal Ladies Cup, a prestigious female football tournament for elite U14 and U16 age groups which traditionally follows the Emirates Cup weekend at the Emirates Stadium.
The venue for the Arsenal Ladies Cup is the University of Hertfordshire, which offers superb playing and sports facilities and where female football is one of the key development sports.
This year's tournament took place on Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd August boasting the strongest field yet assembled in both U14 & U16 age groups, with 140 girls taking part.
With the U14 age group consisting of Arsenal, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Colchester United and the U16 age group consisting of Arsenal, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Team Rogaland (Norwegian select team) the tournament provided some excellent fixtures for players and spectators alike.
Day one of the tournament involved a round robin competition where each age group played in a league format. They played the other teams in their age group, which determined where they finished in their league and who they were to play on finals day. First and Second place would play the final for the Arsenal Ladies Cup with third and fourth place playing a final of their own.
Day two of the tournament was finals day. In the U14 age group Arsenal took on Manchester United, in what was an extremely competitive game, both teams playing some excellent football with the Arsenal girls coming out on top as eventual winners. In the third and fourth place play off Colchester beat Aston Villa in a very close game.
The U16 age group final was played out between Arsenal and the Norwegian select side, Team Rogaland of which the Norwegians were the winners. Aston Villa beat Manchester United for 3rd place.
The tournament was a great success which showcased the best of girl's elite football with Arsenal Ladies now looking to make the event bigger and better for 2011.
