Carl Jenkinson believes Newcastle have a gem on their hands in reserve goalkeeper Rob Elliot - a former team-mate of his at Charlton.

The Arsenal right back and Elliot were both part of Chris Powell’s side at The Valley last season, before making summer moves to the Emirates and St James’ Park respectively.

Despite seeing his friend’s chances limited at Newcastle so far, Jenkinson insists the 21-year-old has the class to make it in the Premier League.

“It is strange when you look back at how quickly it has happened for both of us. I am delighted with how things have panned out and it is fantastic for him as well,” he told Arsenal Player.

“It will be nice to see Rob and have a catch up because I haven't seen him since we both moved on from Charlton.

“He is a fantastic keeper and he was outstanding last year, so it was no surprise to see someone come in and pick him up. It was on the cards, so I was really pleased that it was a big club like Newcastle.”

Alan Pardew’s side have been this season’s surprise package and Jenkinson expects a tough test against them at Emirates Stadium.

“They have been excellent - they have a good side there,” he said. “They have been grinding out results and it is not going to be an easy game at all. We know we are in for a battle but we just need to rise to it.”
