Three teams of youngsters from Arsenal in the Community’s Premier League 4 Sport volleyball programme enjoyed success last week during the annual PL4S London Volleyball Invitational Cup.
Hosted at Brentwood County High School in Essex, in partnership with Volleyball England and the Chelsea FC Foundation, the tournament brought together fellow London clubs Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United for the half-term boys and girls tournament.
Each club brought up to three teams to the tournament – all of Arsenal’s teams did the Club proud with the older group of girls winning their competition outright and the younger group performing admirably to finish in a respectable fifth place.
The boys group, meanwhile, finished in third place in their competition – a great effort considering they were competing against two far more experienced teams. The event, which combined participants from both the Camden and Clapton clubs, will act as a useful warm-up ahead of the PL4S National Volleyball Tournament in July.
Alesandra, who was playing in her first Arsenal volleyball tournament, commented: “It was really good fun playing volleyball. Representing Arsenal was great and it was nice to play against our other local rivals. We played with a new team and I think we did well and got better as the day went on. It was obviously really nice to win as well!”
Zak Wooster, Chelsea Foundation PL4S Coordinator and host added: "A tournament involving different Premier League teams always has a special feel about it as the young people want to win and play well to show they are proud representing their teams.
"This event was extra special as it was the first time that all four Clubs had competed together and the standard of play was fantastic to watch. Rees Warren [of the Chelsea Foundation] did a brilliant job organising the day which saw over 56 girls and boys play in a friendly yet competitive way. Congratulations to Arsenal Girls for winning their event as well."
