ARSENAL IN THE COMMUNITY

Rivals link up for table tennis, badminton

London rivalries were put to one side earlier this week, as Arsenal joined forces with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur to host a combined table tennis and badminton competition, as part of the Premier League 4 Sport programme.

Arsenal in the Community, in conjunction with Badminton England, English Table Tennis Association, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and the Chelsea Foundation, hosted a replay of the competition for young people that was postponed last December.

Fittingly, all three Clubs tasted success on the day with Arsenal’s Billy May and Surindran Haridas winning the badminton ‘cup’ and ‘plate’ finals respectively. Despite the fierce nature of the competition and footballing rivalries, all of the youngsters played with great etiquette and with a fantastic attitude.

Billy May commented after winning, “The standard was so much higher than other tournaments I have entered, so it was great to win!”

Premier League 4 Sport co-ordinator, Ross McKinley added: “The event was a real success, both in terms of numbers taking part and the way that the tournament was carried out. The standard was really high and seeing how much the young people have improved since the start of the programme is really pleasing. It was great to see Spurs and Chelsea come over and we hope this is the first event of many to come.”

Arsenal Football Club would like to thank both Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea for bringing their teams along, the young people for giving up their half term, and St Mary Magdalene Academy for letting the Club host this competition in their great facilities.

This event continues some of the fantastic activities that the Arsenal PL4S programme has had in recent months including the Fred Perry Urban Cup and the Midlands Regional Volleyball tournament.
