Kick It Out award Arsenal intermediate level
Arsenal Football Club has been awarded the Intermediate Level of Kick It Out’s Racial Equality Standard, a framework document which encourages and supports the development of racial equality practice at professional clubs in the UK.
Arsenal’s successful submission for the Standard was judged by panel members from Kick It Out and is a result of the Gunners furthering equality measures in line with criteria specified including within Emirates Stadium and its outreach, within policies and planning as well as in the Club’s administration and management.
Arsenal’s CEO Ivan Gazidis said: “This is a great achievement for Arsenal and is something of which the supporters and staff can all be very proud. Our ‘Arsenal For Everyone’ initiative shows just how important diversity and equality is to the Club and it’s fantastic that our efforts in this area have been recognised. As CEO, I am personally committed to ensuring that everybody connected with Arsenal is treated equally, with dignity and respect.”
Kick It Out Director Piara Powar said: “This is great news for everyone at the club. It sets Arsenal’s work on diversity and equality as amongst the best in Europe.
"The Standard covers all areas of operation and shows that the club are serious in working with all communities and all individuals regardless of their background. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
The Intermediate Level of the Racial Equality Standard states that the Club will have demonstrated clear improvements in services as a result of monitoring, consulting ethnic minority communities and implementing its action plan. Arsenal’s action plan included the following activities, all of which were adjudged to have been carried out to a high standard:
- • Arsenal For Everyone and World on our Doorstep programmes were developed further from past years, reinforcing, promoting and successfully communicating Arsenal’s messages regarding equality and diversity
- • Positive equality images were used at all times within publications and club channels.
- • Underrepresented groups within Emirates Stadium and Arsenal’s supporter base were communicated to through Arsenal in the Community programmes and marketing initiatives
- • An ethnic minority representative and gay supporter representative were recruited onto our fans’ forum group.
- • All stewards completed relevant training in line with the Intermediate Level of the Standard.
- • Surveys were completed by staff in order to collect information including ethnic origin, age, sex and disability. The survey was developed to include experiential data such as questions concerning any experience of discrimination.
- • A mandatory diversity and equality training programme was launched and is being delivered to all Arsenal Football Club staff.
The next step for the Club is the Advanced Level of the newly named Equality Standard, the highest level to be awarded by Kick It Out.
