Gunnersaurus at William Tyndale Primary School
Arsenal's very own Gunnersaurus helped children and the local community of William Tyndale School on Upper Street, Islington celebrate the opening of a brand new £240,000 3G Astroturf sports pitch on Thursday 29th April.
The new ‘Onside William Tyndale Community Sports Pitch' will give attending pupils access to top of the range sports facilities in an area of London desperately short of green spaces for sport.
Perfect for football, it will also be used for school games such as rounders, hockey and cricket. The local community will be able to hire the facility after school hours, in the evenings and at weekends.
The Onside Sports Pitch has been largely funded by the Football Foundation, with the support of Islington Leisure, Arsenal in the Community, the Islington Police, St Mary's Ward Islington and the William Tyndale FSA and the school community. Funded by the Premier League and The Football Association, the Football Foundation is the nation's largest sports charity. Launched in July 2000, the Foundation celebrates its tenth anniversary this summer and has so far supported 8,000 community sports projects worth £880m.
Spearheaded by the William Tyndale Charitable Trust, the project has taken three years to get off the ground. Becky Crichton-Miller, Chair of the Onside Campaign said: "We are so pleased to be opening such a fantastic 3G sports pitch. It is a superb asset for the community and a stunning resource for William Tyndale school. There are not many inner city Primary schools with such great facilities. The children are thrilled."
Head of Arsenal in the Community, Alan Sefton who attended the official opening said: "This is a fantastic facility for the local community. Arsenal in the Community coaches look forward to continuing to deliver our football sessions to William Tyndale pupils on such a fantastic playing service. We're proud to be a part of this regeneration project."
