Arsenal keepers take the literacy quiz

Arsenal goalkeepers Vito Mannone and Lukasz Fabianski were tested on their literacy skills earlier this month, when they teamed up with Year Five and Year Six pupils at Newberries Primary School in Radlett, to take part in a quiz based around the Club’s innovative Double Club Literacy programme.
The event saw both Vito and Lukasz act as team captains for an ‘A Question of Sport’ themed quiz, taking part in various literacy challenges including word games and spelling contests, alongside selected pupils.

To give the quiz a suitably Arsenal theme, the players also took part in a ‘Who Am I?’ round, in which the children had to describe the Arsenal player - past or present - that appeared on the big screen to their blindfolded captain.
The event, which was witnessed by the entire junior school, proved to be a huge success, with Lukasz Fabianski’s team eventually prevailing.
Each of the Double Club pupils also received a signed photo of their respective captain to bring the event to a close.
Speaking about the event, Double Club coach, Steve Eadon, said: “The children were so visibly enthused by the players’ visit and hopefully this will give them an added boost throughout the rest of their time in school.

"I cannot emphasise enough how big an impact a club like Arsenal can have on its community, particularly among school children who really do see the players as their role models. It was great to see both Vito and Lukasz engaging with the pupils and being such great sports from start to finish.”
The Arsenal Double Club is an innovative education and football programme which offers a range of subjects, together with football coaching. It aims to fuse football and education together to form a fun and enjoyable way for young people to engage with their academic studies and football at the same time.
Regular Double Club sessions have been taking place weekly at Newberries Primary School since the start of the school year, as part of the Club’s agreement with Hertsmere Borough Council. This sees the council work in partnership with Arsenal to promote a range of exciting initiatives including a comprehensive curriculum and after schools programme, school holiday activities, girls' football and a range of diversionary projects.
