Emmanuel Frimpong and Marouane Chamakh were the surprise visitors at Borehamwood’s Yavneh College last week, when they paid the school a visit to promote Arsenal’s Gap programme.
After a presentation from Arsenal in the Community about the opportunities open to Gap Year students around the world, the pupils quizzed the Gunners’ duo on their lives in and out of football.
Programme co-ordinator John Olaleye spoke to the students about the opportunities available to them once they complete their A-Levels, including the chance to coach with the Club in schools local to Arsenal and then use those skills teaching children around the world, including Israel.
Alan Sefton, Arsenal’s Head of Community, commented, “The day was a great opportunity to speak to Jewish young people about a programme that helps to promote better relations between Jewish and Arab children using the power of football. Our Gap projects continues to go from strength and strength and I hope some of those students involved will feel inspired to apply to the programme.”
Yavneh College Headteacher, Dr Dena Coleman, enthused, “Yavneh College was delighted to host Arsenal this morning. We encourage our students to develop their extra-curricular activities and I’m sure many of them will have been excited to hear about what the Club is doing in Israel and other parts of the world.”
The Year 12 students enjoyed the opportunity, even those non-Arsenal fans. Student Lewis Silver said, “Even though I am a Spurs fan, it was brilliant to get an insight into the life of a professional football player.”
Emmanuel also promised the group that he would use Twitter to tell his followers about Yavneh College’s charity project – a promise he made good within half an hour of leaving the school.
