Gap Year coach John Olaleye on location in Indonesia
Arsenal seeking new 09/10 Gap Year recruits
Arsenal Football Club’s fourth Gap Year scheme is now accepting applications for 2009/2010 school year. The scheme gives young people the opportunity to undertake a year’s placement with the Club to gain valuable coaching experience and even have the chance to spend three months overseas at an international Arsenal Soccer School in locations such as Thailand, Indonesia, Egypt and Greece.
The Gap Year is open for applications from young men and women over the age of 17 until the end of July for a September 2009 start.
At the beginning of the programme, Gap Year youngsters gain valuable qualifications in coaching, refereeing, first aid, child protection and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) whilst spending time coaching and teaching in local schools and community soccer schools in and around north London in order to build up confidence levels.
Experience with Arsenal’s education initiative, the Arsenal Double Club, which fuses the popularity of football with school subjects is also gained which helps participants in the scheme with their communication skills in anticipation of coaching youngsters overseas.
The year is split into three parts from September to December, January to April and May to August and Gap Year participants can expect to spend around three to four months overseas after successfully completing parts one and two in north London with the Club.
Alan Sefton, Head of Arsenal in the Community said: “This is an exceptional way of spending a gap year with Arsenal for both boys and girls before or after further or higher education. The scheme gives participants the opportunity to acquire a skills set which can be applied in a variety of ways after the scheme comes to an end. It’s a fantastic way for any football or sport enthusiast to see the world, learn new skills and enjoy themselves.”
Ideally, applicants will have some experience of working with children or in schools, not necessarily coaching football, although the ability to demonstrate basic football techniques is a requirement. Successful candidates need to demonstrate a willingness to learn and a responsible attitude.
The cost of the programme is £500* plus a £250 returnable deposit. Candidates are required to pay for their own flights. The Club will provide insurance but candidates must also cover any additional personal expenses.
*The £500 funds various courses:
- F.A. Level 1 coaching badge
- First aid
- TEFL
- Child protection
- Referee course
Participants will also receive Nike AFC training kit plus two to three Arsenal training sessions each week.
