Arsenal in the Community marked its recent £2million investment in the Premier League 4 Sport programme by kicking off its netball programme – one of four new sports to be introduced as part of the scheme’s extension until at least 2013.

The launch competition took place at the Sobell Leisure Centre, the home of Islington Netball Club, with just under 50 girls aged 11-14 from five local schools participating in the tournament.

They were joined by a special guest, England Netball and Hertfordshire Mavericks star, Sasha Corbin, who many of the girls had seen in action for the national side during a recent trip in Liverpool. Sasha’s presence spurred the participants on to produce some excellent performances, which were even more impressive considering many of the girls were taking part in their first ever tournament and had only been training for a few weeks.

Sian Cieslar, Head of PE at Camden School for Girls said: “Today was, for some of the girls, their first ever match that they have taken part in. They were so happy to win some games and get a medal and I hope this will encourage other girls in the school to come along and take up netball in the future.”

Alan Sefton, Head of Arsenal in the Community, added: “It was great to see so many girls taking part in today’s tournament. Netball, being one of the recent editions to the PL4S programme, has started really well. A big thank you must go to Alesia Carrington from Islington Netball Club and Elaine Smith from England Netball for all of their support in coaching and organising this event.”

The competition forms part of a series of inter-satellite netball tournaments taking place over the coming months, culminating in the PL4S national tournament in May featuring the other four Premier League football clubs that have so far added netball to their programme; Liverpool, Fulham, Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion.

Netball will run as part of PL4S until at least 2013, enabling the programme to double in size and further extend its target for sports participation among young people.

Arsenal’s PL4S Netball sessions run on the following days and times:

Mondays - Sobell Leisure Centre, N7 - 3.30-5.30pm
Tuesdays - Highbury Fields Girls School, N7 - 3.30-5.30pm
Thursdays - Camden School for Girls, NW5 - 3.30-5.30pm
