Arsenal: The Official History 1886-2009

The latest edition of the popular Official Illustrated History of Arsenal from Hamlyn brings the Club’s story right up-to-date with a look at the 2008/2009 season, while stretching back to the Club’s very beginnings back in 1886. Along the way, it takes in the key moments, players and managers who have shaped Arsenal’s fascinating history.

After detailing the varying degrees of success the Club enjoyed in the early days of professional football, it moves to the 1930s, when Arsenal becomes one of the most famous football clubs in the world. Under Herbert Chapman’s stewardship, George Male, Herbie Roberts, Ted Drake, Alex James and Cliff Bastin form the backbone of a team that wins five League Championships and two FA Cups. The 1970s are also a key point in time, as the era sees Arsenal become one of the few Clubs to win the Double in 1971. Here we encounter legendary players of the likes of George Graham, Charlie George, Ray Kennedy, Bob Wilson, George Armstrong and Frank McLintock.

The Club’s dramatic journey takes another turning in 1989 when the Championship trophy returns to Highbury for the first time in 18 years. This achievement is followed up with a further Championship, FA Cup and Football League Cup victories, as well as European success.

Finally, we enter the golden age of Arsène Wenger, whose inspirational leadership sees an exhilarating and fluent style of football introduced, not to mention three League Championships, four FA Cup triumphs and four Community Shield victories.

At the same time as providing an enthralling overview of the Club’s story, the Official Illustrated History also caters to stat fans, with a complete statistical record of European and domestic games, including all the teamsheets from 1970 onwards. What’s more, it features special sections on Managers, International stars and Club Records.
