Ladies: Sunderland v Arsenal - Preview

Emma Mitchell

By Connor Armstrong

Emma Mitchell feels last weekend’s win at Chelsea could act as a springboard as Arsenal look to continue their late title surge.

Danielle van de Donk’s goal sealed a dramatic comeback win for Pedro Martinez Losa’s side, and Mitchell revealed that confidence is sky high in the Gunners camp ahead of Sunday’s clash against Sunderland.

Arsenal are third in the Women’s Super League table and sit just two points behind Chelsea, and a victory this weekend could see them leapfrog their London rivals.

"I’m going to keep working hard in training and make the gaffer decide, but I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season now"

“We’re confident. We believe we can really push on from here and we feel like nobody can beat us,” Mitchell told Arsenal.com. “We’re going to keep taking it game-by-game, train hard and see what happens.

“We’re under no pressure - the pressure’s on Chelsea and Manchester City. If we keep getting the three points, we’ll see what happens.”

“I think we were dominating before the goal [at Chelsea]. They scored a lucky goal but I never really felt under pressure.

“I always believed we could get back into it with the type of players we’ve got. Even if we go a goal down, we always know that we can claw it back and win it.”

Mitchell had been sidelined in recent weeks due to illness, but is hoping for a sustained stay in the starting XI during the run-in, starting with Sunday’s encounter with Sunderland, who lost 5-1 to the Gunners at the end of June.

“It was good to be back out there, I had a virus a couple of weeks ago but trained hard this week and the gaffer gave me the nod,” Mitchell said.

“I felt a bit tired having just come back in, it was really warm on Sunday but it was a game where you’ve really got to be aggressive and come and compete with the players they've got. I was happy with my aggression and the way I competed.

“I’m going to keep working hard in training and make the gaffer decide, but I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season now.”
