Billy Warnes

Billy Warnes was the son of Rube Warnes, a former amateur boxing champion.

It was not in the ring where Billy followed his father's footsteps, but on the football pitch.

Warnes' senior record eventually stood at just one FA Cup appearance - a 2-0 defeat against Walsall in January 1933 - but it could have been more.

He enjoyed success with the team as London Combinations champions in 1928/29, London FA Challenge Cup winners in 1930/31 and was an England amateur international. And Warnes’ return of 37 goals in 89 Football Combination matches was not to be sniffed at.

Nonetheless, a professional career at Highbury would evade Warnes. He eventually made the switch to Norwich City in May 1933, before retiring and setting up a tobacconist and confectionery business.
