Joe North joined Arsenal as an amateur from Sheffield United in October 1919 after the First World War.

The centre forward turned professional two months later and made his league debut in a 3-2 win over Oldham at Highbury in February 1920.

North served as a lieutenant in the Army during the war and won the Military Medal.

The striker struggled to hold down a regular first-team place in his two-and-a-half year spell at Arsenal and joined Reading in May 1922.

North later appeared for Gillingham, Norwich and Watford.

He was also an accomplished cricketer and played for Middlesex between 1932 and 1937 before later becoming a Minor Counties umpire.
