'Jack' Aston flickered briefly for Arsenal at the end of the 19th century.

He joined the Club as a promising 21-year-old inside-forward in May 1899 and made his debut on the opening day of the following season against Leicester Fosse.

Aston opened his account for Arsenal in his fifth match - a 3-1 defeat at Chesterfield - and then netted four times in five fixtures in November 1899.

Two of those came in an epic FA Cup Third Round Qualifying tie with New Brompton which was eventually settled after a fourth replay. Aston scored in the second and third replays but could not deprive Brompton of a 1-0 win in the decisive game.

His scoring run resumed with a brace against Small Heath but Aston would play just one more League game for Arsenal before Paddy Logan became his long-term replacement.

Aston made further appearances for Arsenal in the Kent League but returned to the Midlands in the summer of 1900 to play for Small Heath before heading north for a spell with Doncaster.

He ended his career at his home-town club, Walsall.
