That’s exactly what Samir did against West Bromwich Albion on a sun-kissed opening day in 2008/09. And the diminutive playmaker proved he was no flash in the pan throughout his first campaign with the Gunners. In his 29 appearances last season, the Frenchman bagged seven goals including a scintillating brace against Manchester United to secure a 2-1 victory against the eventual champions. The fans officially recognised his overall contribution with Samir voted fourth in Arsenal’s official Player of the Season poll.
Signed initially to cover for the departed Alex Hleb, the man from Marseille proved a more than worthy replacement for the Belarus midfielder. Samir racked up 25 successful dribbles, far more than any other player in the Arsenal squad, and was Arsenal’s top scorer outside the striking unit.
However, Samir’s preparation for an exciting second season was curtailed during Arsenal’s pre-season tour of Austria. The 22-year-old suffered a fractured fibula in training and it was originally forecast that he would miss the season’s opening “two to three” months.
MY YEAR
October
After returning from a broken leg in the Reserves' 2-2 draw against Wolves, Samir told Arsenal.com how happy he was to be back. "It has been three months I was injured so I am really glad to be back," he said. He then made his first-team return in the 2-1 Carling Cup win over Liverpool.
September
Samir remained on the sidelines in September after breaking his leg during a pre-season training session in Austria. Arsène Wenger revealed that he hopes to have the Frenchman available again in October.
August
Samir's broken leg kept him out of action in August, but manager Arsène Wenger said the Frenchman should return in October.
