8. Samir Nasri

Go

Samir was signed in the summer as a ready-made replacement for Alex Hleb

The French international midfielder is just as assured in possession, just as inventive - and he has an eye for goal too. The 21-year-old, who made two appearances at Euro 2008, arrives with a big reputation after being voted as French Ligue One's Young Player of the Year in 2007.

Samir made 145 appearances for Olympique Marseille, winning the Intertoto Cup in 2005 and helping them finish third in the French League last season. The new Arsenal recruit was a major reason why Marseille will compete in the Champions League this term.

Wenger is clearly delighted with his major summer acquisition. "He is young, quick and technically an outstanding player," said the Arsenal manager. "He has shown great potential with his performances for Marseille and the French national team over the past two seasons and he will add great quality to our squad."

MY YEAR

October

Samir played some part in all five of October’s fixtures and his highlight came against Everton on the 14th. Arsenal had gone behind to a ninth-minute Leon Osman strike and had failed to equalise in the first half. Three minutes after the interval it was Nasri, from all of 20 yards, who thundered home a low strike to set-up their 3-1 triumph over the Toffees.

September

Samir picked up an injury in the first week of September while away on international duty. The knee problem kept him out for most of the month but he returned with a mercurial performance in September’s final game against FC Porto. Nasri managed 65 minutes on the left-wing in that 4-0 Champions League victory and showed glimpses of what the fans can expect from him in the future.

August

Arsenal fans hoped the Frenchman would hit the ground running; in fact, Samir started at a sprint. The 21-year-old took a little over 250 seconds to open his Arsenal account, scoring the winner against West Brom on the opening day of the season. The midfielder followed up that effort with the first goal in Arsenal’s 4-0 demolition of FC Twente at Emirates Stadium. For his outstanding efforts in August, Nasri was named O2/Arsenal.com Player of the Month.
