Lukasz Fabianski

While Lukasz may not have played as much as he would have liked last season, he proved a reliable presence whenever he was handed his opportunity to shine.

With Polish compatriot Wojciech Szczesny in inspired form, Lukasz found it difficult to force his way into the first-team reckoning, although he was an ever-present in the Club’s run to the Carling Cup quarter-finals. Unfortunately for the 27-year-old, a knee injury sustained in the Champions League defeat at Olympaicos in December sidelined him for an extended period.

He returned in time to feature against both Aston Villa and Sunderland in the FA Cup and Szczesny admitted he faces fierce competition from Lukasz for the No 1 shirt. “I believe Lukasz is the best No 2 in the country,” he said. “Every time he goes in goal the team is confident he will do a good job, and to have someone like that behind you gives you a lot of motivation to work hard at the training ground.”

Lukasz joined the Club in 2007 after two impressive seasons with Legia Warsaw and has appeared regularly for the Polish national team. Disappointingly Lukasz missed out on representing the co-hosts at Euro 2012 after a knee injury ruled him out of the tournament.

I was never bothered [by the criticism] I just concentrate on what I have to do.”

Confident, commanding and assured, Lukasz became a key figure in the Arsenal side after a number of crucial saves and important performances during October. Against Everton he made a string of late saves as Arsenal recorded successive away wins.

December

Lukasz went about his business quietly in December as he continued to produce assured performances as the Arsenal No 1. He was expected to return the following week against Stoke before the game was postponed due to bad weather. He did return for games against Chelsea and Wigan.

"I am preparing myself to play in every single game and I am ready to play in the Premier League.”

January

Lukasz started in both of Arsenal's FA Cup clashes in January and told Arsenal TV Online's Spotlight programme that he is waiting for his chance to impress Arsène Wenger in the Premier League. February

Lukasz started Arsenal's Champions League defeat in Porto but conceded an own goal after 11 minutes to give Porto the lead. After the match captain Cesc Fabregas spoke out in support of Fabianski. "He is a very good keeper," said the midfielder. "It didn't go his way [in Porto] but we will stand up and support him until the end because he is a good character and I am sure he will be back. Whenever he has to play, I am sure he will do well."

September

October

Every time Fabianski has an opportunity to play he does very well.”

December

An injury to Manuel Almunia ensured that April was a very busy month for Lukasz. The Polish keeper came on after 27 minutes of Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Villarreal and kept his place between the sticks until April 26. His undoubted lowlight of the month came on April 18, incidentally his 24th birthday, when his misjudgement allowed Didier Drogba to round him and tuck in Chelsea’s winner in the FA Cup Semi-Final. In an interview with Arsenal TV Online on April 24, the keeper described the moment as his “lowest point”.
