Eduardo’s competitive return from injury was probably the most heartwarming sight of last season.
It came on February 16, 2009, seven days before the anniversary of the horrific injury he suffered at Birmingham.
Making a full recovery from that broken leg and dislocated ankle was an achievement in itself. Even better, Eduardo appeared to be as good as ever. He marked his comeback with two FA Cup goals against Cardiff and followed that with an impudent volley against Burnley in his next match.
Those goals proved what Arsenal fans had suspected – Eduardo is the Club’s most clinical finisher since Ian Wright.
Whether he is connecting with a cross, racing onto a through-ball or snaffling a rebound, Eduardo is icy cool in front of goal. That is a rare talent and, if he stays fit, the Croatian striker could be a major player this season.
MY YEAR
October
A thigh injury kept Eduardo out of the Arsenal side until he returned as a late substitute in the 2-2 draw at West Ham. He then started against Liverpool and was a substitute against Tottenham.
September
Eduardo was handed a two-match European ban by UEFA for 'attempting to deceive the referee' in the Champions League Play-Off Second Leg against Celtic in August. The ban was eventually annulled, and the Croatian striker said he was pleased "we have finally arrived at the truth". Eduardo scored the winning goal at Standard Liege with his knee and wasn't afraid to point that out to the visiting supporters. He missed the trip to Fulham but was involved in four Arsenal matches this month.
August
Eduardo was on target twice for the Gunners in August. The Croatian bagged Arsenal's sixth as they destroyed Everton and also scored a penalty at Emirates Stadium in the Champions League Play-Off second leg.
