Away days at Goodison Park are never easy and that was the overriding thought as our party headed north-west on Wednesday afternoon. When I was reminded our hosts had won their previous five league games at home, including victories over Chelsea, Spurs and Man City it really brought home how difficult a night it could be.
Yet with a nice easy journey under our belt and the usual pre-match activities enjoyed with typical aplomb we took our place in the away section of the old 'traditional' Bullens Road Stand full of the kind of confidence only form like our most recent gives you.
Roared on from the first whistle once again by our magnificent away support we genuinely could have been three or four up inside the first 15 minutes or so, RVP and Rambo both seeing great chances go begging.
Tommy V's towering header gave us the lead our great start deserved and was to prove oh so crucial on the night.
As the game progressed our hosts came more into the game and we enjoyed some good fortune too with their disallowed goal.
Looking back at the George Graham era I remember many games like Wednesday night. Good going forward back then too but once in front, fantastic at defending that lead. It was very much how the 'One-nil to the Arsenal' became part of our recent history.
Having defended admirably up at Goodison we enjoyed some good opportunities to double our lead late on, RVP thumping the post was as good an example as any.
The final whistle was extremely welcome, especially with results elsewhere on the night. A massive three points from a very tough fixture and it takes us into Villa at home on Saturday in a strong position.
Twenty-seven more points to play for. That sounds an awful lot and is all we need to realise that our job is far from over. Incentive if one is needed to make sure we push on tomorrow.
The atmosphere at home in recent games has been simply magnificent. Nobody present can argue it doesn't prove we too are an extremely important part of this whole Arsenal 'team'.
More of the same please guys and dolls!
