On occasion football has a nasty little habit of finding no more than a split-second to ruin a good weekend. Saturday evening was definitely the perfect example.
The long journey north had proved relatively trouble free and consequently, once checked into our hotel in the Wallsend area of nearby Newcastle we enjoyed some fine pre-match fare in our usual haunt in Sunderland's city centre.
Of course Cesc's goal was incredibly fortunate and gave us something to build on but Lady Luck definitely did her very best to even things up as the afternoon wore on!
To be honest, it is only Alex's sending off that really disappoints me referee wise. If Songy's performance deserved an early bath I'm not really sure what the point is of playing football. It was nothing short of ridiculous.
I thought our defensive display was absolutely superb. Despite our hosts enjoying a large chunk of the possession and throwing a lot of crosses into our box they created very little.
Our chance to win the game comfortably came of course with the penalty. Don't get me wrong, Tommy's effort was poor but the fact our first choice three penalty takers were all off the pitch just comes down to bad luck.
Although I'm not sure where the extra four minutes came from I still felt we defended admirably and with a certain degree of comfort. The corner came in after the four were up and again we cleared. That was when we all felt the whistle would be blown. It didn't however, an unlucky ricochet in the box and two precious points were taken away. That's football I guess.
It made the journey back into Newcastle hugely depressing and the night out probably a little more low key than usual.
Off down the Seven Sisters Road we go next as we take on our local rivals with a whole different set of players I'm sure.
A good test for our youngsters, it will be interesting to see how they come through.
