Myles, a Kent-based Gooner, is currently enjoying life as a student based in the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and as a result he had reliably informed me it is a great city to go out in on a Wednesday night. With our Carling Cup tie taking place it was simply too good an opportunity to turn down!
Consequently I am writing these thoughts while waiting for my flight back south and graced with a huge bout of the usual nausea!
While discussing last night's events with my fellow traveller Uncle Dave over a strong black coffee this morning his sarcastic (I think!) claim that he doesn't remember too much about the game probably demonstrates the kind of day/night it turned out to be.
If our first goal was graced with a degree of good fortune, the whole performance certainly wasn't. Once again this was a starting line up that saw nine changes from Sunday and emphatically demonstrated the strength in our current squad.
Of course some can argue our hosts made a similar number of changes but so did they in the last round and they turned over Chelsea in their own back yard.
A Wednesday night, live on the TV, the Carling Cup, away at our furthest possible destination on the football map, all the ingredients for a smaller following. Well over three thousand travelling Gooners is not only hugely impressive but we were lucky enough to witness an awesome 4-0 away victory in what on paper was an extremely tough cup tie.
Our second goal was laced with a small degree of controversy after the Geordies' centre half collided with Nicky Bendtner but let's be honest Usain Bolt wouldn't have caught Theo on last night's form. His two cool finishes on the night either side of Nicky's thumping strike completed a night well worth celebrating.
And of course it would have been rude not too!
A top top night out to whack the icing all over a massively enjoyable Carling Cup cake!
Saturday lunchtime's draw will determine who we take on in the last eight before our latest London derby as we take on the Hammers.
Always a fixture with an edge to it we need to be ready, sharp and up for it to pick up all three points.
Right, another paracetamol for me!
