Our award-winning Arsenal double club has proudly set the blueprint for many community education programmes for over a decade.
The Arsenal Double Club is an innovative education and football programme which offers a range of subjects, together with football coaching. It aims to fuse football and education to form a fun and enjoyable way for young people to engage with their academic studies and football at the same time. Arsenal in the Community established the Arsenal Double Club in 1998 following the team’s successful league and cup double winning campaign.
Outreach / Stats
The Arsenal Double Club continues to grow and have a positive impact on young people’s educational attainment, in an average year we will:
- Reach over 1500 pupils (primary & secondary) in literacy clubs alone
- Work with 50 teachers who deliver Double club materials
- Provide 1,000’s of hours of fully engaging and structured learning time for young people
How it works
Sessions are usually 1½ hours in length, reflecting a football match with 45 minutes in the classroom and 45 minutes football coaching with an Arsenal Community coach. All teaching materials are printed in full colour, use lots of match day photos and are usually accompanied with a matchday programme.
The project runs as an after-school club in primary and secondary schools, and increasingly in curriculum time. The Double Club format is also used in weekend homework/SATS revision clubs on local housing estates, during holiday programmes and in alternative education settings such as Pupil Referral Units. Football is the motivation, and all education resources are based on Arsenal or football in general. The Double Club uses qualified teachers, T/A’s, locally trained volunteers and Arsenal staff to deliver the classroom activities.
Many schools use the resources with targeted pupils being offered Double Club lessons as an intervention programme. Most modules are aimed at underachieving pupils at Key Stages 2 and 3 but are easily adaptable to suit other needs.
If you would like to get your school or youth group involved in any way or have any questions about the programme please contact the Double Club Coordinator Jack McNicholl at firstname.lastname@example.org or on 0207 704 4149.
The Double Club has modules in the following subjects:
Languages (French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian)
Diversity and Citizenship
Art and Design
Business Studies (post-16)
Double Club Languages
In 2006, the Arsenal Double Club branched out into Modern Foreign Languages to raise the profile of language learning in schools.
In addition to the Arsenal themed learning materials for German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, a DVD of one of Arsenal’s players speaking in their native language is provided as an exciting classroom resource.
As with the literacy modules, Double Club Languages also incorporates a practical football session, although our insistence on using key vocabulary in the target language during these sessions allows pupils to reinforce their classroom learning.
Since its launch, Double Club Languages has won a host of prestigious awards – most recently, the 2012 Threlford Memorial Cup that was awarded by the Chartered Institute of Linguists for ‘fostering the study of languages’.
Such is the pioneering nature of the programme, more than 10,000 pupils from over 300 primary and secondary schools from right across the UK have taken part since its inception.
