The brother of former England cricket captain Mike Gatting, Steve started out as an apprentice with the Gunners in 1975, signing as a professional in 1977.

A versatile midfielder of defender, he played a significant part in the squad which reached three consecutive FA Cup finals before joining Brighton for £200,000 in September 1981. He made well over 300 appearances in a ten-year spell with the south coast side before enjoying two years at Charlton Athletic.

Now back at Arsenal, he plays a vital part in the Academy scholars' all-round development, working as a tutor to the Club's youngsters. He will also take charge of the Under-16 side this season, taking training sessions and working with them on matchdays.

Steve's son, Joe, is a highly-rated young striker at Brighton who had already scored five goals for the club's senior side by the end of the 2006/07 season.
