Inter Milan, twice winners of the European Cup, went close to emulating their successes of 1964 and 1965 when they reached the semi-finals of last season's competition.
The Italian giants were eliminated on away goals by city rivals AC Milan, who went on to lift the trophy. Defeat on 'away goals' was all the more frustrating since both legs were played in the San Siro, a stadium shared by both Milan clubs.
Inter qualified for this year's Champions League after finishing second to Juventus in Serie A last season. Arsenal, who bought Dennis Bergkamp from Inter in 1995, have never met the Italians in a competitive match.
